Knockphelagh was acquired by NadurNua in 2025. It’s a 78 acre mature mixed woodland of Ash Dieback. Alder and Norwegian Spruce in a beautiful location beside the River Cauteen in County Tipperary.
In March 2026, a new 750 metre forest road was constructed to allow heavy machinery to fully access the woodland. This was followed by the harvesting of the 63 acres of Ash Dieback. The harvested timber was sold for biomass.
The 63 acres will be reconstituted in December 2026 with native Irish Trees. Knockphelagh will become a predominantly Native Irish Woodland.
There are very mature hedgerows throughout the property with Dogrose, Hawthorn, Blackthorn and Crab Apple providing nesting and food sources for both birds and mammals. Close to the river there are also young Oak trees. There is regenerating Oak and Alder across the understory.
The age profile of the 15 acres of Norwegian Spruce make it suitable to manage according to Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) principles into the future. This will allow natural regeneration of native tree species over time.
The vision for Knockphelagh is to become a multi-species, multi-aged woodland, combining ecological resilience with a sustainable timber resource.
Knockphelagh is “Cnoc Bhéal Átha” in Irish, “Hill of the Honeysuckle”, dating back to 1636 as a townland.
