Fungi

Fungi in Ireland are vital for environmental health. The key benefits are:

Nutrient Cycling: Fungi break down organic matter, releasing nutrients back into the soil, which is crucial for nutrient cycling in Irish ecosystems

Forest Health: Mycorrizhal fungi connect trees, facilitating the exchange of nutrients and improving forest resilience, often enabling trees to access nutrients otherwise unavailable.

Soil Health: They are fundamental to maintaining healthy soils, breaking down debris and supporting plant life.

Over 47 species of fungi have been identified so far on NádúrNua’s woodlands. Kilnacappagh, County Tipperary, has the highest recorded numbers of fungi with 22 species, a sign of a really healthy woodland.
