NádúrNua is installing habitat boxes on its woodlands to help support wildlife. Derelict farm buildings are also being used.
Barn Owl and Kestrel boxes have been installed in Curraheen, Cooldine, Muckanagh and Aghaweenagh to support these red-endangered species. Two barn owl boxes are already occupied. Bird boxes for Tree Creepers, House Martins, Swifts, Tits and Sparrows have also been put in place.
Similarly Bat boxes have been installed in Curraheen, Cooldine, Muckanagh. and Aghaweenagh. A Pine Marten den has also been erected in a Bog Woodland in Muckanagh.
To support the Native Irish Honey Bee, we have installed four loghives in Curraheen, Cooldine, Kilrush and Aghaweenagh. All of these loghives are now occupied. We will be continuing this across the other woodlands in 2027.
These habitat boxes are being introduced in parallel to planting more native trees to help enhance biodiversity in each woodland. Over 128 habitat boxes have been installed so far on NádúrNua’s woodlands.
