One of NádúrNua’s key priorities is to increase the planting of native Irish trees. In Ireland we have 33 native trees and shrubs. NádúrNua intends to plant as many of these native trees and shrubs as practical.
To date NádúrNua has planted 151,700 new trees (85% native Irish trees and 15% Conifers). The main native Irish tree species are Oak (33%), Birch (21%), Alder (15%), Hazel (6%) and Rowan (3%).
Ten other native Irish trees species have been planted. These are Scot’s Pine, Hawthorn, Wild Cherry, Guelder Rose, Blackthorn, Holly, Crab Apple, Aspen, Bird Cherry and Spindle. Many of these fruit and seed producing trees will provide food for birds, mammals and other wildlife.
NádúrNua tries to source local seeds and saplings wherever possible to minimise the chances of disease from foreign sources.
In May 2025 NádúrNua joined the Irish Native Woodland Alliance, a newly created voluntary partnership of charities, environmental organisations, community groups and landowners united by a shared commitment to protecting and restoring Ireland’s native woodlands.
